March 1, 1896 - Dimitri Mitropoulos, composer and conductor was born in Athens, Greece.

March 1, 1904 - Glenn Miller, American big-band leader was born in Clarinda, Iowa.

March 1, 1930 - Pierre Max Dubois, French composer was born in Graulhet, France.

March 2, 1695 - Bernhard Christoph Breitkopf, founder of the music publishing firm in Leipzig, was born in Klausthal Harz.

March 2, 1824 - Bedrich Smetana, Bohemian composer, was born in Leitomischi.

March 2, 1905 - Marc Blitzstein, American composer was born in Philadelphia.

March 4, 1678 - Antonio Vivaldi, Italian composer was born in Venice. His most famous work is "The Four Seasons". Vivaldi was commissioned to compose ten concerti grossi for Johann Offenbach, which he completed in just three days.

March 4, 1895 - Bjarne Brustad, Norwegian composer and violinist was born in Oslo.

March 4, 1915 - Carlos Surinach, Spanish-American composer was born in Barcelona.

March 4, 1921 - Halim El-Dabh, Egyptian composer and teacher (Kent State University in Ohio), was born in Cairo. He created an original drum notation system.

March 4, 1928 - Samuel Adler, composer, organist, and teacher was born in Mannheim.

March 5, 1853 - Arthur Foote, American composer, teacher and organist was born in Salem, Massachusetts.

March 5, 1887 - Heitor Villa-Lobos, Brazilian composer and preserver of over 1,200 folk songs was born in Rio de Janeiro. He composed numerous piano solos.

March 8, 1714 - Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, their son of Johann Sebastian Bach was born in Weimar, Germany. He composed the famous Solfeggietto and Allegro di Molto for piano. He was employed by Frederick the Great in 1740.

March 8, 1911 - Alan Hovhaness, American composer whose music is a reflection of his Armenian background, is born in Somerville, Massachusetts.

March 9, 1910 - Samuel Barber, American composer, was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania.

March 14, 1681, Georg Philipp Telemann, German composer who was a contemporary of Handel and Bach was born in Magdeburg.

March 21, 1839 - Modest Mussorgsky, Russian composer was born in Karevo.

March 22, 1842 - Mykola Lysenko, Russian composer was born in Grinki, Ukraine.

March 25, 1881 - Bela Bartok, Hungarian pianist and composer, was born in Nagyszentmiklos. He collected hundreds of folksongs.

March 27, 1851 - Vincent d'Indy, French composer and author is born in Paris.

March 28, 1903 - Rudolf Serkin, the famous Austrian pianist, teacher and music administrator was born in Eger.

March 29, 1918 - Pearl Bailey, the famous American jazz singer was born in Newport News, Virginia.

March 31, 1732 - Johann Joseph Haydn, Austrian composer was born in Rohrau. He is known as the "Father of the Symphony". He taught Beethoven for a short time.
