Famous Pianists, Composers & Musicians born in June.
June is a very musical month with birthdays of many famous musicians to celebrate. Topping the list will be Robert Schumann and Grieg. It is very hard to say whose music is heard more today…Schumann or Grieg? I enjoy both of their famous piano concertos. June 1, 1804 - Mikhail Glinka, the famous Russian composer was born in Novospasskoye. He used Russian folk songs in his compositions and was known as the "father of Russian music".June 1, 1826 - Fredrich Karl Bechstein was born in Gotha, Germany. He was the piano manufacturer of the famous, expensive Bechstein pianos. June 2, 1857 - Sir Edward Elgar, the famous English composer and church organist was born in Broadhearth. He succeeded his father at St. George's Roman Catholic Church in Worcester as organist. June 2, 1915 - Robert Palmer, the great American composer associated with Cornell University, was born in Syracuse, New York. June 5, 1923 - Daniel Pinkham, American organist, composer and faculty member at New England Conservatory of Music was born in Lynn, Massachusetts. June 6, 1840 - Jon Stainer, English composer and organist, was born in London. June 6, 1903 - Aram Khachaturian, the fantastic Soviet, Armenian composer, conductor, was born in Tiflis. His Toccata for piano is a favorite with pianists worldwide. June 6, 1915 - Vincent Persichetti, the American composer was born in Philadelphia. June 7, 1908 - Boris Goldovsky, the Russian-American pianist and conductor was born in Moscow. He directed the opera workshop at Berkshire Music Center, Tanglewood, Massachusetts from 1942 till 1962. June 8, 1810 - Robert Schumann, the great German composer was born in Zwickau. His wife Clara was a composer and concert pianist. Robert composed numerous piano pieces for their five children as well as difficult pieces for his wife to perform. Schumann died in July of 1856. June 9, 1981 - Cole Porter, the noted American musical-comedy composer, was born in Peru, Indiana. June 9, 1900 - Fred Waring, the famous American choral conductor was born in Tyrone, Pennsylvania. He was also the inventor of the Waring electric blender. June 12, 1897 - Alexandre Tansman, the Polish born French composer, pianist was born in Lodz. He was the biographer of Igor Stravinsky. June 13 - Eduard Poldini, the Hungarian composer, was born in Budapest. He is best remembered for his delightful piano solo, "Doll Dance". June 14, 1909 - Burl Ives, American folksinger, was born in Jasper County, Illinois. June 15, 1843 - Edvard Grieg, the famous Norwegian composer, was born in Bergen. His mother was his first piano teacher. Much of Grieg's music is based on Norwegian folk songs. He is best known for his "Peer Gynt Suite" for orchestra which he conducted with the London Philharmonic. Grieg's Piano Concerto in A minor is a timeless favorite. He died September 4, 1907. June 16, 1853 - Emil Sjogren, the Swedish composer was born in Stockholm. June 17, 1818 - Charles Gounod, the great French composer, organist and conductor was born in Paris. June 17, 1882 - Igor Stravinsky, Russian-American composer is born in Oranienbaum. June 18, 1757 - Ignaz Pleyel, the Austrian pianist, composer, and piano manufacturer, was born in Ruppertsthal. June 18, 1942 - Paul McCartney, the English rock 'n roll singer of the famous "Beatles", was born in Liverpool. June 19, 1902 - Guy Lombardo, the Canadian-American dance orchestra leader, was born in London, Ontario. June 20, 1819 - Jacques Offenbach, the famous composer of light operas, was born in Cologne. June 20, 1946 - Andre Watts, the American pianist, was born in a United States Army camp at Nuremberg, Germany. His mother was Hungarian and his father was an American soldier. June 21, 1732 - Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach, German composer was born in Leipzig, Germany. He was the ninth son of the famous J. S. Bach. June 22, 1830 - Theodor Leschetizky, the Polish pianist, teacher and composer was born at Lancut. His famous teacher was Czerny. Leschetizky's students included Schnabel, Gabrilowitsch and Paderewski. June 24, 1916 - Ruth Shaw Wylie, American composer was born in Cincinnati. June 24, 1935 - Terry Riley, the American avant-garde composer, was born in Colfax, California. June 27, 1819 - Albert Loschhorn, the German Composer and pianist was born in Berlin. He published a series of studies for piano. June 28, 1712 - Jean-Jacques Rousseau, the Swiss born French philosopher, music critic, opera composer, and contributor to and Encyclopedia was born Geneva. His Dictionaire de musique appeared in 1768 in Paris. June 29, 1908 - Leroy Anderson, the great American composer of light popular music, was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
