The words of this song were written by Phillips Brooks (1835-1893). He was the Bishop of Massachusetts. At the age of thirty, Brooks set out on a journey to the Holy Land. Right before Christmas, he took a horseback ride from Jerusalem to Bethlehem and was inspired to write the words to this song as well as the words to "O Little Town of Bethlehem." Music
