Famous Musicians and Composers Born in the Month of August

August boasts such birthdays as composer Leonard Bernstein; the inventor of the metronome; Mr.Grove, as in Grove's dictionary of music and an array of happenings that are most exciting, so read on as we wade thru the month of August.

August 2, 1923 - The International Society for Contemporary Music holds its first festival in Salzburg.

August 3, 1795 - the Paris Conservatory is founded.

August 4, 1910 - William Schumann was born in New York City on this day. He was a composer, conductor and friend of Leonard Bernstein. From 1945 to 1962 he was president of the Julliard School of Music; later he became president of the Lincoln Center to 1969.

August 6, 1909 - Karl Ulrich Schnabel was born in Berlin. He was a great German pianist and composer, the son of pianist Artur Schnabel.

August 8, 1857 - Cecile Chaminade was born in Paris on this day. She was one of the great woman composer-pianists. Chaminade's piano solo, "Scarf Dance" sold 5 million copies.

August 8, 1882 - Olga Samaroff, American pianist and teacher was born on this day in San Antonio, Texas.

August 11, 1862 - Carrie Jacobs Bond - American song writer and composer was born on this day in Janesville, Wisconsin. She is best known as the composer of "I Love You Truly", and "A Perfect Day".

August 13, 1820 - Sir George Grove - the musicologist known for his "Dictionary of Music and Musicians" was born in London.

August 14, 1810 - Samuel Sebastian Wesley was born on this day in London. He became the organist and composer of the Church of England.

August 15, 1772 - Johannes Nepomuk Maelzel was born on this day in Regensburg, Germany. He was the inventory of the metronome used to keep a steady beat for musicians. The initial of his last name is always added to the tempo indication in music:
M.M. 60 means Maelzel's metronome, 60 beats to the minute.

August 15, 1887 - Marion Bauer, American composer, teacher and writer of numerous books on music was born in Walla Walla, Washington.

August 18, 1750 - Antonio Salieri, the great Italian opera composer and teacher whose students included Beethoven, was born in Legnago, Italy. He was accused of trying to poison Mozart, his rival. Pushkin wrote a drama based on this rumor and the great composer Rimsky-Korsakov set it to music.

August 18, 1785 - Friedrich Wieck - the father of Clara Schumann, was born in Pretzsch, Germany. He was a pianist and a famous teacher of his time. Robert Schumann stud
ied with him.

August 21, 1893 - Lili Boulanger, French composer and pianist, was born on this day in Paris, France.

August 21, 1904 - Count Basie, the American jazz pianist, band leader and composer was born on this day in Red Bank, New Jersey.

August 22, 1862 - Claude Debussy, the great French composer regarded as the inventor of the musical style "Impressionism", was born on this day in St. Germain-en-Laye. Every accomplished pianist has played Debussy's beautiful piano solo, "Claire de Lune"

August 22, 1868 - Maude Powell, the famous American violinist was born on this day in Peru, Indiana.

August 23, 1854 - Moritz Moszkowski, the German pianist and composer was born on this day in Breslau, Germany.

August 24, 1924 - Louis Teicher, the popular pianist and famous duo-pianist with Arthur Ferrante, was born on this day in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

August 25, 1918 - Leonard Bernstein, the versatile, talented composer, conductor and pianist was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts.

August 28, 1949 - the Aspen Music Festival was founded in Colorado on this historic day. . . the 200 anniversary of Goethe's birth.

August 30, 1853 - Percy Goetschius, the American music theorist was born on this day in Patterson, New Jersey. He was the author of numerous books on music composition and theory.
