Famous Pianists, Composers & Musicians born in April.

There were no fools born on April Fools day. Here are the famous born on that day and the entire month of April. Some important events that occurred in April are mentioned.

April 1, 1732 - Franz Joseph Haydn was born in Austria.

April 1, 1866 - Ferruccio Busoni, pianist, composer was born in Empoli, Italy.

April 1, 1873 - Sergei Rachmaninoff - The Russian concert pianist and composer was born in Russia on his parents estate near Oneg. He became an American citizen before he died.

April 1, 1909 - Eddy Duchin was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was a popular pianist and orchestra leader.

April 3, 1843 - Felix Mendelssohn becomes the first director on the official opening of the Leipzig Conservatory.

April 3, 1905 - Lili Kraus was born in Budapest. She was a concert pianist who was imprisoned during World War II by the Japanese while on a concert tour in Southeast Asia.

April 4, 1882 - Mary Howe was born in Richmond, Virginia. She composed many works.

April 7, 1899 - Robert Casadesus, the French composer and pianist was born in Paris.

April 7, 1908 - Percy Faith was born in Toronto, Canada. He was a popular conductor and arranger of easy listening popular music.

April 9, 1939 - Marian Anderson sang in a concert for 75,000 people a the Lincoln Memorial which was sponsored by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt to protest the racial discrimination shown to Marian Anderson when her performance was denied the use of Washington's Constitution Hall, owned and administered by the Daughters of the American Revolution.

April 11, 1916 - Alberto E. Ginastera was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was a great composer and teacher. One of Ginastera's famous works for piano is "Danzas Argentinas"

April 12, 1844 - Franz Kullak was born in Berlin, Germany. He was a great composer and pianist.

April 13, 1896 - The American Guild of Organists was founded in New York City.

April 13, 1958 - Van Cliburn won the Tchaikowsky Competition in Moscow. He was the first American to win.

April 16 - Federico Mompou was born in Barcelona, Spain. He was a pianist and composer.

April 16, 1924 - Henry Mancini was born in Cleveland, Ohio. He was an award-winning composer for television series and films.

April 17, 1882 - Artur Schnabel was born in Lipnik, Austria. He was a pupil of the famous Leschetizky. Schnabel was a great pianist and teacher.

April 18, 1777 - Ludwig Berger was born in Berlin, Germany. He was a great pianist, composer and teacher. Berger had a student who would become more famous than he was . . . that student was Felix Mendelssohn.

April 21, 1899 - Randall Thompson was born in New York City. He was a professor at Harvard University and a composer.

April 22, 1858 - Dame Ethel Smyth was born in Rectory, England. She was a composer and active as a woman suffragist.

April 23, 1891 - Sergei Prokofiev was a Soviet composer born in Sontsovka. He received severe criticism for his contemporary style of music from Soviet government officials.

April 24, 1721 - Johann Philipp Kirnberger was born in Saalfield, Germany. He was a music theorist and teacher. Kirnberger was violinist for Frederick the Great.

April 25, 1918 - Ella Fitzgerald was born in Newport News, Virginia. She is best known as a great jazz singer.

April 30, 1916 - Robert Shaw was born in Red Bluff, Iowa. He was a great choral arranger and conductor. Shaw was the founder of the Robert Shaw Chorale.

April 30, 1870 - Franz Lehar was born in Komorn, Hungary. He was a composer of many waltzes.
